Salveson Stetson Group Launches Non-Profit Fund to Help Non-Profits Fill Leadership Positions

$100,000 Fund Established to Help Offset Cost of Retained Search

Monday; April 6, 2009

RADNOR, PA – April 6, 2009 – In response to the toll the economy is taking on non-profit institutions, search firm Salveson Stetson Group (www.ssgsearch.com) today announced the creation of The Salveson Stetson Group Non-Profit Leadership Fund, a resource that will help underwrite the cost of executive searches for non-profit institutions.

Funded by a $100,000 in-kind contribution from Salveson Stetson Group, the Fund will cover half the cost of a senior executive search at a non-profit organization. Retained search firms typically are paid one-third of the first-year compensation for identifying and placing an executive in a new organization. The Fund will enable qualifying non-profit institutions to take advantage of the professional skills of a search firm at a time when the need for strong leadership is more important than ever.

“While most of the attention, resources and government stimulus efforts are being directed to the for-profit sector, we have chosen to invest in and support the non-profit sector,” said John Salveson, a principal with Salveson Stetson Group. “We have created a Leadership Fund to provide financial support to non-profits seeking new leadership in these challenging times.”

In this environment, effective leadership is essential for all organizations, but particularly for non-profits, Salveson said.

“Dwindling endowments, strapped donors and evaporating government support make leadership more important than ever. Non-profit executives must possess an unusual mix of skills and experience coupled with a leadership style that is inspirational, decisive and collaborative.

“Not surprisingly, that unique combination of leadership skills and passion for the mission can be very difficult to locate.”

Leadership Fund grants will be made to five non-profit organizations to cover one-half of the cost of a retained executive search. Organizations that meet the criteria outlined on the application should apply directly to the Leadership Fund. To be eligible, the organization must have an annual revenue budget of less than $100 million; be headquartered in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware; be a qualified 501(c)3 organization; and have an open executive-level position in need of qualified candidates. Half of the fee for the search will be paid by the hiring organization and half will be provided by the Leadership Fund.

A panel of area leaders in the non-profit field will evaluate the applications. Members include:

  • Patricia A. Coulter, President & CEO, Urban League of Philadelphia

  • Liz Dow, President, LEADERSHIP Philadelphia

  • Kenneth E. Kirby, Senior Vice President, Development, Main Line Health

  • Joseph H. Kluger, Associate Principal, WolfBrown

  • Jane G. Pepper, President, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society

  • H. Ray Welch, President and CEO, Mercy Health System

Salveson Stetson Group has conducted senior level search assignments for non-profit organizations for many years. The firm’s principals, Sally Stetson and John Salveson, serve on the boards of several area non-profit organizations.
